This 5-day tour from Marrakech to Tangier via the Sahara Desert is for travelers who want to see the real Morocco in one continuous journey — not just a city or two, but the full picture. You start in Marrakech and finish in Tangier, crossing some of the most dramatic and varied landscapes in North Africa along the way.
Day 1 takes you across the High Atlas Mountains to the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Ben Haddou — a filming location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and dozens of other productions. Walking through it, you forget all of that. It's just genuinely beautiful. From there, the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs takes you east through the Rose Valley to the Dades Gorge, where your hotel sits right on the edge of the canyon.
Day 2 brings Todra Gorge — where 300-metre rock walls close in on either side and the canyon narrows to almost nothing above you — before the landscape opens into wide desert and the first dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon. Your camel is waiting. The light on the sand at sunset does something extraordinary, and your luxury desert camp is waiting on the other side with a traditional Moroccan dinner, Berber music around the fire, and a sky so full of stars it barely looks real.
Day 3 starts with the Sahara sunrise — one of those things that photos never quite capture — before the long drive north through the Ziz Valley, the cedar forests of Azrou, and the unexpected Alpine streets of Ifrane, arriving in Fes by evening. Day 4 is for the medina — the tanneries, the mosques, the souks — before heading north to Chefchaouen and its famous blue streets in the Rif Mountains. Day 5 brings the final drive to Tangier, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic and your journey ends.
Five days. Five completely different landscapes. One of the most rewarding routes in Morocco.
Leaving the red plains of Al Haouz and the Medina of Marrakech behind us, we climb up in the High Atlas Mountains to reach the highest pass of Tizi n'Tichka at 2260 meters. Along the way, you can observe Amazigh life as we pass through adobe villages, terraced fields, and beautiful countryside. From the pass, we will stop for a photo break before descending to visit the ksar of Ait Benhaddou, a fortified stronghold on the old salt caravan road to Timbuktu. This is also a favorite filming location, and many movies have been made here.
After lunch near Ouarzazate — Africa's own version of Hollywood — you'll head east along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing through the Skoura Palm Groves, Kelaat M'Gouna and the Valley of Roses. By evening the Dades Gorge opens up ahead. Your hotel sits right on the edge of the canyon.
After breakfast, we leave this impressive gorge to visit another one further along the valley. In Tinghir, we take the road up to the Todra Gorge, a favorite place for international rock climbers, which boasts a 300-meter vertical fault and a crystalline glacial river running through it. This pink-tinted canyon is only 10 meters wide at its narrowest point and was formed by glacial activity. Nomads can be seen filling water containers with their donkeys.
By late afternoon the landscape shifts completely — the green valleys give way to open desert and the first golden dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon. Mint tea on arrival, then your camel guide takes you into the dunes as the sun begins to drop. At camp, dinner is served, the fire starts, the music begins — and when it all winds down, the desert goes quiet. Look up.
Set your alarm. The Sahara sunrise is one of those things that photos never quite capture — the way the light spreads slowly across the dunes while the whole desert shifts colour in complete silence. After breakfast, ride back to Merzouga by camel and begin the drive north.
Our journey then continues as we travel to Fes via Erfoud, Aoufous, and Errachidia along the magnificent Ziz Valley, which has been carved through volcanic rock and the Tizi n'Talghemt pass to Midelt. We stop to enjoy lunch and refresh with a glass of mint tea.
From there, we enter the Middle Atlas, home to the majestic cedar forests and the indigenous Barbary macaques, which can be seen in Azrou. They are fun to watch and often steal food from passing cars. Then, we drive to Ifrane, known as Little Switzerland due to its alpine-style architecture, where we will stop for a photo and coffee before arriving in the imperial city and ancient medina of Fes. Accommodation will be in a traditional riad with half-board service.
After breakfast, you will have a half-day guided tour of the medieval city's rich spiritual and cultural heritage. We will visit the Bou Inania Medersa, the Medina, and the Kairaouine Mosque, where you may take photos of the wonderful courtyard from the main gate and the Mausoleum of Moulay Idris II.
Following lunch, we will head to the Roman ruins of Volubilis for another cultural tour of ancient lifestyles, featuring massive columns and intricate mosaics.
Heading north, we drive across the picturesque countryside full of wildflowers and rolling fields to reach the rugged mountains of the Rif and the hidden Medina of Chefchaouen. Overnight in a riad with breakfast. We recommend dining at the atmospheric Outa el Hammam Square.
In the morning, you can wander around this charming blue city and discover its hidden streets and blue doors. It has many intriguing artisan shops ideal for last-minute gifts and for taking those fantastic photos.
After lunch, we head north to Tangier — where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic and Africa meets Europe. Drop-off at your airport, port, or hotel marks the end of the journey. You'll arrive tired, full of stories, and already wondering when you can come back.
Every stop on the route has been chosen carefully — comfortable enough to rest properly, local enough to feel like Morocco. All accommodations include dinner and breakfast. Upgrades are available at every location if you want more comfort or are celebrating a special occasion.

"My 5-day Marrakech to Tangier tour has just concluded, surpassing my initial expectations. My driver, Idir, was an exceptional tour guide, and it was so great learning about the different parts of the country from him. A night in the Sahara was the highlight, but not far behind was the walking tour in Fes, the Kasbah tour in the desert, and exploring Chefchaouen on the final night.
