Yes! Riding a camel in Merzouga is one of the best ways to experience the stunning Sahara dunes and discover the traditional Berber culture and peaceful desert scenery. It is a great experience, and I would recommend it to everyone who visits.

Overnight camel treks in Merzouga typically range between $60 and $120 per person per night, depending on the class of accommodations, meals included, and the duration of the trek.

The answer to whether camel trekking is ethical depends on the company you choose to go with. Using ethical and responsible operators ensures that the camels are well taken care of, unlike lesser-regulated operators that may not prioritize animal welfare as much.

For most people, a camel trek of 1 or 2 nights is sufficient to enjoy the magic of the desert and experience its culture. Longer treks, such as 3 nights or more, will allow for more exploration and quiet time while in the desert.

Most of the camel rides are done in Merzouga and Erg Chebbi dunes (nearby); however, you can ride camels in the Zagora desert or even in the Sahara near the town of Erfoud.

The drive from Merzouga to Marrakesh is somewhere between 9 and 10 hours of drive time — a distance of about 560 kilometers (350 miles), through picturesque mountains and deserts.

The most common camel trek is the one you will undertake as part of the overnight experience, lasting approximately 1.5 hours and including stunning sunset photos, as well as the option to sandboard down the dunes. This trek will lead you to a traditional desert camp where you will spend the night under a sky full of stars.
