This 4-day desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga is a circular journey — you start in Marrakech and come back to Marrakech, with the Sahara Desert somewhere in the middle. Four days is the right amount of time to do this route properly. You get a real morning in Dades Gorge, proper time in Todra Gorge, and a full desert experience in Merzouga without any of it feeling rushed.
If you have less time, consider our 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour, or for a more relaxed pace, explore the 5-day desert itinerary.
Day 1 takes you across the High Atlas Mountains to the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Ben Haddou — walking through its ancient alleys, you stop thinking about the film sets and just see how beautiful it is. From there, the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs leads east through the Rose Valley to the Dades Gorge.
Day 2 brings Todra Gorge — where 300-metre walls close in and the canyon goes quiet — before the landscape opens into desert and the first dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon. Your camel is waiting. The sunset ride into the dunes is one of those moments that's hard to describe and easy to remember.
Day 3 starts with the Sahara sunrise before the scenic drive back via the Draa Valley — one of the most beautiful drives in Morocco, with thousands of palm trees lining the road through Agdz. Day 4 brings the final drive back through the High Atlas to Marrakech. You'll arrive tired, full of stories, and already thinking about when you can come back.
Departure at 8:00 AM from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. From the moment you leave the city, the landscape starts doing the work. You'll climb through the High Atlas Mountains, stopping at Berber villages along the way, until the road reaches the Tizi n'Tichka Pass at 2,260 metres. Pull over here — the views are worth every minute.
The road winds through Berber villages and terraced hillsides — stop when something catches your eye. There's no rush on Day 1.
In the afternoon, we'll visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Benhaddou, a location that has served as the backdrop for many well-known movies. Situated on the old salt road, it was once a bustling hub for Saharan trade caravans transporting salt, gold, ivory, and enslaved people to the cities, offering a unique insight into Morocco's rich cultural and historical heritage.
Ouarzazate is the next city, known as the Hollywood of Africa, as it has several cinema studios with sets that were used in movies like Cleopatra. The landscapes change as we take the road east to the Dades Valley, passing through Skoura with its oasis and hidden kasbahs, and Kelaat M'gouna, where the famous Damascus Rose is grown and manufactured into cosmetic and culinary products.
We will spend the night in a hotel where you will enjoy a traditional Berber dinner prepared in the heart of the Dades Gorge.
After breakfast at the hotel, we will drive back down the valley, with opportunities to stop and take a look at the unusual rock formations called "Monkey Fingers", which are found only in this area, and the remains of Ait Youl, a 19th-century adobe Kasbah.
After we leave the Dades Valley line, we drive to Tinghir and then onto the Todra Valley, where you will see endless views of the valley, with old adobe Berber buildings overlooking the scenery.
As we arrive at the Todra Gorge, you may see some rock climbers trying to ascend the 300-meter vertical walls of the gorge. The translucent waters of the river will make this a memorable stop.
Lunch will be in Rissani, and then we drive out to the village of Merzouga. You'll be welcomed with mint tea in Merzouga before your camel guide leads you into the Erg Chebbi dunes as the sun begins to drop. The light on the sand at this hour does something extraordinary — deep gold, then orange, then something that has no name. Your luxury desert camp is waiting on the other side.
Set your alarm. The Sahara sunrise is one of those things that photos never quite capture — the way the light spreads slowly across the dunes while the whole desert shifts colour in complete silence. After breakfast at camp, ride back to Merzouga — the dunes look completely different in the morning light. Freshen up at the guesthouse, then head south via Rissani — one of the most authentic market towns in southern Morocco, worth a wander if it's market day (Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday).
We'll continue towards Agdz, via Alnif and Tazarine, before arriving in the fascinating Draa Valley, where we stay in a hotel at the edge of the Atlas Mountains, among hundreds of Berber Kasbahs.
After a traditional breakfast, we will leave the Draa Valley as we journey from Ouarzazate to Marrakech.
Lunar landscapes and panoramic views of oases with date palms, Berber villages, and rugged mountains give you an insight into Morocco's diverse landscapes. These are the locations often chosen by filmmakers; The Last Temptation of Christ, Jewel of the Nile, and The Mummy were all filmed here.
The road zigzags down from the pass to the plains below and finally back into Marrakech. Drop-off at your accommodation marks the end of the journey — four days, one complete loop, and more of Morocco than most people see in a week.
Every overnight stop on this route has been chosen carefully — comfortable enough to rest properly, local enough to feel like Morocco. Upgrades are available at every stop if you want more comfort or are celebrating something special.
