Day 1: Marrakech, Ait Ben Haddou, Zagora

Your 2-day desert tour from Marrakech to Zagora starts at your hotel at 07.30 a.m. It takes the road over the High Atlas. At the highest point is the Tizi n´Tichka pass, at 2260 meters of altitude, with stunning views of the region.

We take a road to the left to visit the fortified ksar of Ait Ben Haddou—a UNESCO world heritage site. You can walk the village to its highest point to get a better view and perspective of the location.

We continue to Ouarzazate. We will stop for lunch near Kasbah Taourirt. It is a cultural and historical place of interest.

After lunch, we will go south to Agdz and the mighty Draa Valley’s largest palm plantation. It was the trade route for Saharan camel trains from Timbuktu. They carried gold, spices, and enslaved people and returned with salt.

This region has many impressive Kasbahs. Tamnougalt is a five-hundred-year-old ksar with many fine examples of rammed earth architecture. The landscapes become more vast and lunar as the Sahara nears. The huge oasis of date palms is always with you.

We reach Zagora, the last large town before the desert. It’s the native homeland of the Saadian dynasty, which ruled in 17th-century Morocco. Their tombs are in Marrakech.

Once we reach Zagora, you will ride a camel to the campsite in an oasis. There, you can live like a nomad for the evening. You’ll dine under the stars, listen to local music, and sleep in a nomad tent under the stars.

Day 2: return to Marrakech

Your guide will wake you early to see the sunrise over the dunes. Then, you will have a typical breakfast in the Sahara desert camp. We will pack up then and return by camel to meet the driver for the trip back to Marrakech. In the early morning light, the landscape is quite different from the evening.

You will see many more kasbahs and local villages, things you missed on the journey down.
