Itinerary: 6-Day Marrakech to Sahara Desert Adventure

Day 01: Marrakech, Ouzoud Waterfalls, Bin el Ouidane, and Imilchil

After breakfast, we will meet you at your accommodation in Marrakech. We leave for the Ouzoud cascades in the Middle Atlas Mountains. This waterfall is 110 meters high. It has three tiers and is quite spectacular. It may be one of the most beautiful in all of Morocco. The sunlight across the spray from the falls creates many rainbows. You can take a raft to the base of the falls to see its wonder and nature’s power. There are also guided walks to explore and discover this beautiful location. You may well see the indigenous Barbary monkeys that come to feed here. Lunch can also be taken in full view of the cascades, and of course, there are many photo opportunities. After the visit to the falls, we cross the forested terrain in the Atlas by car to the pretty Bin el Ouidane lake. Then, we go to the village of Imilchil, where we spend the night in a hotel.

Marrakech → Imlchil: 150 km, approx. 2.5–3 hrs.
Overnight: guest house

Day 02: Trekking in Imilchil: Visiting the Lakes

The story goes like this. The young lovers, Tislit and, couldn’t marry because of their feuding families. Didn’t want to live without each other, so they decided to drown themselves in two nearby lakes. Legend says it was their tears that filled the lakes. But even in death, they remained apart. A mountain separated their lakes, which kept their souls from meeting in the afterlife. If you are feeling adventurous, you can take a day trip. You can walk the 7 kilometers between these two lakes and imagine the romantic yet tragic story. We can organize a picnic lunch and a pick-up if you get too tired. In September, there is an annual festival of marriage. Local tribes come together, and the women get to choose their partners.

Day 03: Imilchil, Mesmrir, and Dades Gorge

After breakfast, we leave Imilchil and drive south to the Dades Gorge. We pass through Berber villages and stunning countryside. Locals are friendly as they go about their daily tasks. At the fork in the road at Agoudal, we take the option for the Dades Gorge. This is an impressive landscape. It has amazing eroded formations and rose-colored mountains. The river valleys are full of old adobe kasbahs and rich farmland. We spent the night here in a local guesthouse.

Imlchil→ Dades Gorges: 150 km, approx. 2.5–3 hrs.
Overnight: Hotel Babylon or Riad Villa Dades

Day 04: Dades Gorge, Todra Gorge, and Merzouga

After breakfast, we leave this gorge. We discover another one further along the valley. In Tinghir, we take the road up to the Todra Gorges. It’s a favorite place for rock climbers from around the world. They love it because it has a 300-meter vertical fault with a glacial river running through it. This pink-tinted canyon is only 10 meters wide at its narrowest point and was formed by glacial activity. Nomads can be seen filling water containers with their donkeys.

After a lunch break here, we continue south. We pass through palm groves and Berber villages with adobe kasbahs. Then, the landscape changes, and the Sahara sands welcome us to the Erg Chebbi dunes and Merzouga. After a welcome mint tea, we will enjoy the sunset. We will ride camels across the dunes to our desert camp. We will have dinner and listen to local music under the stars.

Boumalne → Merzouga Desert: 150 km, approx. 2.5–3 hrs.
Overnight: Luxury desert Camp

Day 05: Merzouga, Nkob, and Agdz

If you wake up early, you can enjoy the magic of a desert sun. It’s an exceptional and memorable time. We return by camel to the hotel for breakfast and to freshen up. Our adventure continues. We discover the market town of Rissani and the desert towns of Alnif and Nkob, each with its lovely kasbah. We will stop for lunch here. In the future, we’ll take the off-road option to meet the mighty Draa Valley. It has a vast palm oasis and an ancient way of life. In the ksar of Agdz, we will spend the night.

Merzouga→ Agdz: 150 km, approx. 2.5–3 hrs.
Overnight: Kasbah

Day 06: Agdz – Ouarzazate – Ait Benhaddou – Marrakech

We drive north to Agdz’s palm groves of the mighty Draa Valley. The Saghro Mountains are on our right, and the Atlas Mountains are ahead of us. We reach Ouarzazate, the Hollywood of Africa. It is home to film studios and sets for movies like The Mummy and Cleopatra. We go off the road to visit another famous filming location. It’s Aït Benhaddou, where Gladiator was filmed. This adobe fortress, called a ksar, is an important stronghold. It sits on the old caravan routes that traded salt to Timbuktu.

We will have lunch here and take a short visit. We drive over the High Atlas Mountains. We cross the 2260-meter-high pass at Tichka. Then, we descend to the plains of Haouz and the medina of Marrakech.
