Day 1: Marrakech - Ait Benhaddou - Ouarzazate - Dades
Departure time for this tour will be at 8.00 am from Marrakech. Our first day will be full of impressive landscapes and panoramic scenery as we drive out across the plains and through the High Atlas Mountains. Our journey takes us past many Berber villages and rugged mountains with winding valleys and fields of fruit trees. We will make a stop for a coffee break in a picturesque place so you can get some nice photos. In the afternoon, we will be visiting the UNESCO world heritage site of Ait Benhaddou, location of many well-known box office hits. Movie directors come to film here as the region is magnificent, the kasbahs so regal and the history so interesting. It is situated on the old salt road that was used by the caravans to transport, salt, gold, ivory and slaves from distant Saharan lands to the cities. Ouarzazate is the next city, known as the Hollywood of Africa, as it has several cinema studios with sets that were used in movies like Cleopatra. The landscapes change as we take the road east to the Dades Valley, through Skoura with its oasis and hidden kasbahs and Kelaat M´gouna; where the Damascus Rose is grown and manufactured into cosmetic and culinary products. We will spend the night in a hotel where a tradition Berber meal will be prepared in the Dades Gorge.
Day 2: Dades Gorge - Todra Gorge - Merzouga
After breakfast at the hotel, we will drive back down the valley so you can stop and see the strange rock formations called “Monkey Fingers” that are found only in this location as well as the remains of Ait Youl; a 19th century adobe Kasbah. Leaving the Dades Velley, we continue to Tinghir and the Todgha Valley, where you will see panoramic views of the old adobe Berber villages overlooking this valley. As we enter the Todgha Gorge, you may see rock climbers as they attempt to scale the 300 metres high vertical walls of the gorge. The crystalline waters of the river also make this a memorable location.
Lunch will be in Rissani and then we will drive to the village of Merzouga where your camel will be waiting for you. You will be welcomed with a glass of mint tea and a desert scarf before we ride by camel into the mysterious sand-sea of the Erg-Chebbi. This camel ride will be guided by an experienced camel guide. Here we will spend the night under the stars, or if you prefer, in a traditional Berber nomad tent.
