Itinerary: 4 Days 3 Nights from Fes to Merzouga Desert Erg Chebbi

Day 1: Fez - Merzouga

Our English speaking driver will come and meet you at your accommodation in the morning at 08.00am. Today you will be travelling in a 4x4 passing through spectacular and diverse landscapes on your journey from Fes to the distant Sahara dunes. Driving south, we will be passing through the cedar forest where the indigenous Barbary Monkeys live near the alpine towns of Ifrane and Azrou. In winter and early spring this region of the Middle Atlas has snowfall and resembles Switzerland. Your tour promises to be very scenic as we leave the High Atlas and reach Midelt where we stop for lunch. The landscapes change as we pass the Ziz Valley with its extensive oasis of palms with hidden kasbahs. We pass through Erfoud; known for its fossil workshops and minerals that are mined locally. Late in the afternoon, we will arrive in the Sahara and the town of Merzouga where you will be spending the night.
Day 2: Erg Chebbi - Sahara Desert

Today is a day for exploring the desert and seeing how the nomadic and semi nomadic peoples live. This region was once underwater and has mineral rich and fossil rich geological layers. When the French were in the area, they mined for minerals like Barite, we will visit one of those mines today. We will also be discovering hidden oases and settlements, drinking tea with nomads and learning about local tribes and different cultures. Erg Chebbi is the name given to the largest dune which reaches around 250 metres and the sunrise and sunset alters the golden colours making those times of day really magical. In the afternoon, you will be taking a camel ride for between one and two hours to reach your nomad camp for the night. There, your team will prepare dinner, play traditional local music for you and then leave you to immerse yourself in the ambiance, star gaze or moon watch and perhaps you will hear the silence of the desert while you are there too.
Day 3: Merzouga - Todra Gorge

One of the best times of the day in the desert is sunrise, so you will be woken in time to experience this uplifting time of day. You will ride your camels back to the accommodation in Merzouga where you can take a shower if you wish and enjoy a relaxed breakfast. Our first stop of the day is to the village of Khamlia where descendants of Sudanese slaves have made their homes; they play a special kind of Gnawa music which tells the stories of their heritage. Sit back, sip the mint tea and let yourself be transported with their music. We leave the Sahara and drive north to Tinghir and take the road for the spectacular Todgha Gorge; a 300 metre high canyon that divides the High Atlas and the Saghro Mountains which is very popular with trekkers and climbers, as you will see it has a river of crystal clear water and fantastic landscapes offering great photo opportunities. Dinner and accommodation will be in a nearby hotel.

Day 4: Todgha Gorge - Fez
After a delicious local breakfast, we pack up and start our journey back to Fes. From Todgha Gorge we pass through palm groves, and follow the Ziz Valley where we will stop in a panoramic spot to have tea and admire the scene before us. The mountains surround us as we travel northwards to Midelt, you may see nomadic settlements in the fields with their goat hair tents. After lunch, we continue our four day tour travelling through the Middle Atlas Mountains and forests, you can stop to feed the mischievous Barbary Monkeys in the cedar trees and we will stop for coffee in the alpine town of Ifrane. By late afternoon we will reach Fes where we say our goodbyes.
